Participating in the Artisan Organics CSA

Becoming an Artisan Organics CSA Shareholder allows you to develop a direct relationship with your farmer and the land on which your food is grown. Together we experience the ups and downs of farm life… from the disappointment when the weather is just too cool for the peppers to ripen, to the jubilation when the corn has finally matured!

Share Contents

Your weekly share is large enough to feed a family of four omnivores or one vegetarian. The share includes a hand selected assortment of seasonal, fresh, organically grown vegetables. Examples include peas, radishes and lettuce in the spring; tomatoes, corn, peppers, and yellow squash during the summer; crisp greens and broccoli during the fall.

You will pick up your shares at one of our convenient locations in Portland, OR. The Pick-Up Sites page gives you information about the delivery locations and what to expect when you arrive to pick up your shares.

The quantity of vegetables in your share will change over the course of the season. Your shares will be lightest at the beginning in early June when the plants are just beginning to grow. Expect to find produce that features tasty leaves and stems as well as fast growing root crops in your early season share.

You’ll get the greatest quantity of vegetables in August and September, when most of the vegetables have matured, producing the tomatoes, squash etc. you love to eat. In October, you’ll begin receiving vegetables that do well with cooler nights: broccoli, cauliflower, and greens. At the end of October, you’ll also receive vegetables with a longer storage life like winter squash, cabbage, and onions to help you get through the winter months.

Your weekly share of the harvest also entitles you to a newsletter which outlines the day-to-day events on the farm and provides recipes for some of the vegetables included in your share. Unless requested otherwise, your newsletter will be delivered via e-mail prior to your pick up day. In addition to keeping you up to date on farm life, the e-mail reminds you of “Vegetable Pick Up Day” and whets your appetite for the fresh veggies to come!

About Community Supported Agriculture

The concept of Community Supported Agriculture developed simultaneously in both Japan and Europe after World War II.

Though each movement arose independently, both were concerned with forging a direct connection between farmers, the earth, and the people consuming the food.

In 1986, the first Community Supported Agriculture program in the United States began offering shares in New Hampshire. The founders of this farm were familiar with and influenced by both Japanese and European CSA experiences. Since that time, the movement has grown to include more than 1,200 CSAs nationwide.
